This Week at Merit Woods – November 9–15, 2026: Why a flu shot every year
Seasonal tip: Why a flu shot every year
The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older in the United States, with rare exception, get a flu vaccine every season. Flu is a potentially serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. An annual flu vaccine is the best way to help reduce your risk of getting flu and its potentially serious complications.
Why every year? The CDC gives two reasons:
Immune protection from vaccination declines over time.
Flu viruses are constantly changing, so vaccines are reviewed each year and updated to protect against the viruses expected to be most common.
It takes about two weeks after vaccination for protection to develop, so it's best to get vaccinated before flu spreads in your community. Vaccination is particularly important for people at higher risk of serious flu complications. For people 65 and older, the CDC preferentially recommends three specific flu vaccines. Ask us about them.
